History and Milestones

The Halal Center of Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta was established as a university-based halal studies center dedicated to the implementation of the Tridharma of Higher Education, encompassing education and teaching, research, and community service. The establishment of the Halal Center reflects UIN Sunan Kalijaga’s institutional commitment to strengthening integrative, applied, and sustainable halal studies at both national and global levels.

In the area of education and teaching, the Halal Center has actively contributed to the development and enrichment of halal studies curricula, including providing academic input for several courses at the Faculty of Science and Technology and postgraduate programs of UIN Sunan Kalijaga.

In terms of research, the Halal Center has played an active role through participation as a presenter at international conferences in Malaysia and Thailand, the receipt of international research grants in Japan related to global halal standards, and continuous engagement in halal-related research and publications in nationally and internationally reputable academic journals.

Regarding community service, the Halal Center has consistently provided halal certification assistance through both self-declare and regular schemes since 2021, reaching business actors—particularly MSMEs—across 34 provinces in Indonesia. In addition, the Halal Center regularly conducts halal outreach, awareness programs, and educational activities for the general public, business communities, and relevant institutions, especially those concerned with MSME development, business legality, and food safety.

Following the implementation of Indonesia’s halal mandatory policy under Law Number 33 of 2014 on Halal Product Assurance, the Halal Center further strengthened its institutional role through the establishment and management of the Halal Product Process Assistance Institution (LP3H) and has been officially recognized as a Job Training Institution (Lembaga Pelatihan Kerja) by the Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency (BPJPH) of the Republic of Indonesia, particularly in the field of halal human resource development.

Additional key milestones and achievements include:

  • Facilitation of the “Zona Khas” Program (Halal, Safe, and Healthy Culinary Zone), contributing to UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta being recognized as the first Zona Khas in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) and the first State Islamic Higher Education Institution (PTKIN) in Indonesia, implemented at the Suka Halal Foodcourt, a campus dining facility managed by the Business Development Center of UIN Sunan Kalijaga.
